Across the country, young people are banding together to undertake surveys and create heat maps that capture their communities’ desire to mitigate and adapt to rising temperatures, which is helping to ensure that interventions are community-led rather than implemented top-down.

For youth activists, historic climate law is only the beginning  https://youthtoday.org/2022/10/for-youth-activists-historic-climate-law-is-only-the-beginning/ Thu, 20 Oct 2022 14:32:55 +0000 https://youthtoday.org/?p=1094310

Over the summer, youth climate activists ramped up their campaign, organizing petitions, sit-ins, protests and rallies at Congress and state capitols across the country. Their persistence appeared to pay off when Biden signed the Inflation Reduction Act, the federal government’s largest investment in climate action ever, on Aug. 16. The law includes about $370 billion for renewable energy, environmental justice and infrastructure upgrades.

Online registration was among the expanded forms of voter access that several states implemented in 2020 at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. That tool, vote-by-mail, early voting, curbside voting, electronic voting and related initiatives were an upshot of the pandemic for disabled voters, said Michelle Bishop, the National Disability Rights Network’s voter access engagement manager. Yet, since then, she and other observers argue, voter-access progress has stalled in some states.

Sixto Cancel has truly beat the odds. His innovative approach to leveraging a technology platform geared toward capturing the lived experience of current and former foster youth has landed him on the Forbes 30 under 30 list for Social Entrepreneurs and made him an influential voice in the youth services field. After Think of Us released its latest paper on group homes, he rallied alongside Paris Hilton urging legislators to stop abuse in foster care institutions. Cancel has shared his story of growing up in foster care publicly countless times, but it's a harrowing story worth a quick re-telling for those who haven't heard it.
